As a lighting designer, I really relish the opportunity to create work alongside others-- whether through the devised process, live and in the moment, or around a tech table. I love seeing what others are creating and doing everything I can to support the world that they're creating. Whether the scene calls for an intimate, quiet light, or the large and absurd, I truly love the challenge of highlighting the work being created onstage.
My work at Second City has really armed me with the ability to make huge decisions in basically no time which has, consequently, armed me with the ability to make and learn from giant embarrassing mistakes. Often, in my work there, I will get a vague outline for a scene with no script and be asked to design something in about 20 minutes. It is in these moments that I'm forced to break out of any convention that I've boxed myself into and just think about the best way to make effective, evocative, and beautiful work that can be instantly and effortlessly understood.
